Building Blocks Part #2 City Dreams Photoshop
Student Examples-Slideshow #1
Background
To teach Photoshop, we start with the same photos of the building block setup that the students used to create their drawing variations. I ask them to choose two from these photos to begin.
I post a series of screen recorded videos that I created using the LOOM app or the mac QUICK TIME PLAYER app that comes with the OS. Each video demonstrates different tools in Photoshop that they will need to create the two photomontage panels of their invented CITY DREAMS.
The Assignment
Create two 8″ x 6″ (300 ppi, vertical or horizontal) variations of mixed media compositions based on our building block constructs. These should be digital combinations of original photos, drawings, random marks or textures, and photographic cityscape elements. Each variation should be based on a different photo composition.
You can evoke different moods with value changes and color combinations. Additions of textures and other images can be integrated into the original composition with transparency and blending modes to make convincing invented environments. Choose to integrate themes related to current affairs, personal or fantasy narratives, or simply use abstract design elements.
Be sure that in each variation, the building blocks are dominant and easy to make out.
Skillsets: Value, Texture, Space, Multiple Vanishing points, Photoshop; layers, non destructive editing, adjustment layers, selection tools, transform layers, move tool, image size and resolution, loading selections, layer masks, blending modes, transparency
Time Sequence: 3-4 weeks
Two classes with Photoshop instructional video lessons.
Another week to start work on the two panels for homework while working on the panels independently in class. I am available to help when they get stuck.
Work in Progress Critique- to get feedback on work that is almost, but not completely finished. Our most important critique!!
Finals due the following week. Brief critique for improved works.

Step by Step
Before students begin thinking about their assignment, we spend two 3 hour class sessions going through my instructional videos together. I share a Google Drive folder of some photos to work with and ask them to download these to their laptops.
We watch on the projector first, giving it their complete attention. Note taking is not necessary as the videos are available on Canvas for them to watch as often as they need. Then I have them repeat the lesson on their own laptops while I demonstrate on my computer projecting at the front of the class. In this way we move through the steps and tools they can apply to their homework assignment.
